Park Joo-Ryung
Abstract
This study evaluated the Korean art therapy literature to examine the status of art therapy interventions for individuals with physical disabilities and propose directions for future research and intervention. A keyword search resulted in 41 academic articles, which were coded based on pre-determined criteria, and then classified in an inductive manner. Articles were found in 18 academic journals from 1998 to the present, and consisted largely of case studies. Research subjects, in relative size order included elementary school students, the elderly, and the middle-aged. The gender ratio was approximately equal. Pre-post test and session observations were the most common approaches, with qualitative approaches growing in regularity. Interventions tended to last 10-15 sessions, with 1-2, 50-60 minute sessions weekly. Positive effects were reported on variables including self-esteem, self-expression, depression, upper extremity function, visual perception, attention, acceptance of disabilities, and cognitive function. Different theoretical backgrounds, sub-therapeutic goals, and art activities were represented.
